A recent report from our national housing agency highlights that development fees can significantly bump up the cost of new homes\u2014sometimes enough to make or break a project. In fact, reducing these fees could make about 14% more residential developments financially viable nationwide. The impact is even bigger in cities like Toronto and Vancouver: eliminating the charges could boost viable projects by around 10%, and Toronto could potentially meet half of its stated housing needs.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Calgary, development fees are on the lower end\u2014ranging from roughly $4,000 for a one-bedroom high-rise to $9,000 for detached homes. That\u2019s a stark contrast to Vancouver, where similar fees run between $20,000 and $33,000, putting extra pressure on affordability. Of course, these fees do fund essential infrastructure\u2014roads, sewers, and city services\u2014so there\u2019s a balance to strike.
